What Do Construction Drawings Cost?
The cost of Construction Drawings varies greatly depending upon what type of project your building, how much detail is required and even the site conditions; all play a role in your design and the cost associated in producing them. So telling you exactly what your plans will cost will require a quick visit. However, there is some good news, the cost of designing a custom home or a remodel can be greatly reduced through preparation and education of the Client prior to the first meeting. What we mean by that is that going into a meeting with a good idea of what you want, what you need and what you would love to have is always the best start to the first meeting. Another thing I would say is know your construction budget. There's nothing worse than completing home plans just to find you can't afford to build it. The more you know about what you want, the better that vision will be represented in your drawings. Construction Drawings can seem excessive and costly, but trust us when we say you will be better off in the end having a seasoned Architect in your corner! Frequently Asked Questions
Can I Use Floorplans I Found Online?
Typically the answer is No, you can't use plans that you have found online to build your home. Why? Well, because online floorplans are not too helpful for use as actual construction drawings. Older designs tend to be designed with older building codes, construction methods and building materials. Also, online plans also typically don't have foundation drawings and electrical design plans. So if you buy online plans you will still need to hire an designer or at minimum a structural engineer to draft those pieces. With all that said, online plans are great starting point for getting ideas on your floorplan and exterior features you may want. We always suggest that our Clients find a few floorplans they like and tell us why so that we can find a way to incorporate what they like into their home. These plans are a good tool for beginning the design, but I wouldn't suggest anyone build from them.
Do I Need Drawings?
This is a very common question and the answer is a resounding YES!!!, while it is possible for some projects to be built by some contractors without plans, most of the time it makes much more sense to have plans completed by a professional. Typically construction projects that have detailed drawings tend to come in on budget, on time and have far less headaches along the way. There are studies out there that also suggest that a construction project completed with construction drawings will always be cheaper in the end than the same exact project built without plans, even with the cost of the Designer added in. This make sense because there are typically far less corrections and problems with projects that have been professionally organized by an expert Designer. It is also far easier for a builder to create an accurate estimate for construction from a set of blueprints. Also, homes designed by an designer tend to be superior in style, function and structural strength. Whether you're building a new home or considering some remodeling, I recommend that you stick with a pro when it comes to an investment such as your family's home!
